Most people find acne distressing or embarrassing, but ultimately something you 'grow out of'. For some of us, acne can cause significant emotional distress, and more so if the acne results in scarring. Scarring has a much longer term psychological impact and can affect a person's ability to interact socially and generally enjoy their life to the full.
This article looks at how acne and acne scars occur, and a new Sydney acne scar procedure option for treating both conditions using the eTwo SublativeTM Fractionated Radio Frequency (RF) Treatment System.
What is Acne
The acne we are all most familiar with is Acne Vulgaris. This is the 'teenage' acne we associate with adolescence because it is caused by the hormonal changes of puberty.
There are four stages of acne formation:
- Increased oil production in the sebaceous glands in the deeper layer of the skin clogs the hair follicle it sits next to and forms a plug.
- The hair follicle swells as more oil is produced under the plug. As the cells lining the hair follicle die, they mix with the oil and form a bigger plug.
- The plugged hair follicle becomes a target for bacteria, which produce chemicals that kill the cells in the hair follicle, creating more debris to plug up the hair follicle.
- The body's immune system is activated to fight the bacteria and creates inflamed, sore and pus-filled acne lesions.
How Acne Is Linked To Acne Scars
When acne breakouts penetrate the skin deeply, they damage the upper layer and the tissue beneath it. As the acne clears, the body tries to repair this damage. The healing process involved production of collagen, which acts as a scaffold providing support to the skin. Too little or too much collagen in the wrong place will create a scar. Scars can be:
- Raised (hypertrophic) from too much collagen
- Depressed (atrophic) from too little collagen

We don't really know why some people get scars and others don't. If your parents or other family members have acne scars, it is likely that you will scar too. Sometimes even mild acne can result in scarring. The best way to prevent scarring is a quick and effective acne vulgaris treatment.
New Options For Acne and Acne Scar Treatment
A new treatment option to consider if you suffer from acne breakouts or acne scars is the use of radiofrequency energy to stimulate repair and regeneration of the skin. Radiofrequency (RF) penetrates deep into the skin and creates microscopic damage in the dermis. Once injured, the skin begins a very rapid process of repair.
The eTwo SublativeTM RF Treatment System can be used to treat both acne and acne scars. Treatment with RF energy reduces oil production, the primary cause of acne, and kills the bacteria causing the inflammation. The appearance of acne scars is reduced as the repair process stimulates cell growth and collagen production. The new collagen and remodelling of the scar tissue within the dermis improves the texture of the treated skin.
The eTwo SublativeTM RF Treatment System is a safe and low risk option that is proving to be the most effective acne scar treatment in Sydney, with little or no downtime.
